The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned significant railway projects worth Rs 6,798 crore aimed at enhancing connectivity in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. These initiatives are expected to spur socio-economic growth by improving both passenger and freight transport networks.

Project Details and Objectives

A new railway line, costing Rs 2,245 crore, will be constructed in Andhra Pradesh, spanning 57 km between Errupalem and Namburu via Amaravati. This line is anticipated to enhance communication between the southern states and central and northern India. Additionally, it will improve access to religious sites such as the Dhyana Buddha statue and the Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple. The project includes a 3-kilometer bridge across the Krishna River, expected to save 6 crore kg of carbon dioxide emissions—the equivalent of planting 25 lakh trees—and generate 19 lakh human workdays.

In Bihar, a Rs 4,553 crore project will double the 256-kilometer Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur and Narkatiaganj-Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhanga sections. This project aims to enhance connectivity for both Uttar Pradesh and North Bihar by linking the Inland Container Depot in Birgun and running parallel to the Nepali border.

Political Implications and Strategic Importance

The timing of these projects has raised questions, particularly since both states hold political significance for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition ahead of upcoming elections. While some speculate that these projects may have political motivations, they are undeniably crucial for improving transportation and economic growth in key regions of India.

Official Statements

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that the projects are not politically driven but are part of ongoing efforts to enhance India's railway network. He emphasized that these initiatives align with the broader goal of infrastructure development, even if they coincide with the BJP's alliances in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.
